What happens if you take Star Wars and put in a bit of comedy and new-age special effects? You get Guardians of the Galaxy. Peter Quill (Pratt) is a human from Earth who, unknown to himself, has part alien lineage. After being abducted by some aliens as a child, Peter travels the galaxy as a petty thief and doing odd jobs here and there. One such job required him to steal an orb and deliver it to a buyer. He was unaware that the orb contains an Infinity Stone, something so powerful that not everyone can contain its immense power. Ronan (Pace) learns of Peter’s theft and wishes the orb be his so he could rule over the galaxy and orders his trusted aide Gamora (Saldana) to recover the orb. The orb changes multiple hands, friends get made and broken and eventually Peter finds himself fighting against Ronan with Gamora, Rocket (Cooper), a genetically modified Racoon, Groot (Diesel), a tree, and Drax (Bautista) by his side. Like I said, it is easy to compare Peter to Han Solo, Gamora to Princess Leia and Groot to Chewbacca and along with the story of good over evil, you have something of a Star Wars remake. Don’t get me wrong though, the movie is absolutely entertaining in every way. It does not have your typical super-hero antics and actually makes an effort to build a decent story. Great special effects, quirky humour (a little over-done at times) and some nice action makes this a pretty much wholesome entertainer that you can never go wrong with.
Thumbs up: Great story and action
Thumbs down: Seems to have too much of an inspiration from Star Wars
